SPTS wafer processing solutions include market-leading silicon etch, dielectric etch, dry-release etch, PVD, PECVD and molecular vapor deposition (MVD®), available with a range of wafer-handling options applicable to R&D, pilot production, or volume production environments. SPTS is headquartered and has its main manufacturing facility in Newport, UK, with additional manufacturing in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Start Date: September 2020

Primary Purpose of Role

This is a 3-year Advanced Apprenticeship covering aspects of operationmaintenance and process engineering of semiconductor capital equipment produced by SPTS


Key Tasks

As an Applications Apprentice you will join the European Applications Team. This position offers a great deal of variety, throughout the apprenticeship your on the job training and role responsibilities will include the following 


  • Operation and process engineering of semiconductor equipment
  • Mechanical and electrical assembly of semiconductor equipment
  • Fault finding of semiconductor equipment
  • Timely completion of NVQ logbook entries
  • Successful completion of an ONC and HNC in Semiconductor Manufacturing
  • Such other duties as may be reasonably required from time to time.


Training Provided

  • Year 1  First year of Semiconductor Manufacturing on day release at college, on the job training which will include an introduction to mechanical and electrical build, plus testing of SPTS equipment
  • Year 2 – Second year of Semiconductor Manufacturing on day release at college, on the job training which will include an introduction CVD, PVD and Etch processing
  • Year 3 – Third year of Semiconductor Manufacturing on day release at college, on the job training which will include specialisation into one of the semiconductor processing disciplines






Qualification and/or Experience

  • Five GCSE’s including Mathematics,  English and a science at grade C or above
  • First year of ONC or equivalent course in electronics/electrical


Travel requirements

  • Extensive international travel once qualified, some limited  travel likely during the apprenticeship
