The KLA-Tencor Global Products Group is the world leader in the design and manufacture of advanced inspection and metrology tools for inline monitoring of process defects in advanced semiconductor factories.


The Research Scientist will be responsible for designing and conducting feasibility investigations to provide valuable guidance for KLA-Tencor's long-term roadmap in wafer inspection.  KLA-Tencor has a rich history of innovation and technical leadership in wafer inspection for the semiconductor industry.  The advent of devices having 10nm and smaller design rules, using advanced processes and materials, will present a particularly challenging goal of maintaining high-speed inspection and classification of defects.  The Research Scientist will be a critical part of a team within the division's Technology group to identify, investigate, and develop promising new concepts, methods and subsystems that could be used to meet these challenges.  In developing advanced new technologies, the successful candidate will  design and build test apparatus, conceive of and conduct experiments. acquire, analyze and present his/her results to the Technology group, division, and company management.


  • An M.S./Ph.D. in a scientific or engineering field that involves micro/nanofabrication,  ultra-high vacuum systems and electron beam systems is required, along with 2+ years of relevant industry experience. 
  • A Ph.D. in any of these fields is preferred. 
  • The successful candidate will have a proven record of designing highly complex experiments or engineering trials that involve sophisticated software development, data collection and physical measurements to investigate novel concepts and architectures. 
  • The candidate will also have proficiency and demonstrated ability to extract clear results from large, complex data sets. 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills are required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate (Academic) OR
  • Master's Level Degree with at least 2 years of experience OR
  • Bachelor's Level Degree with at least 3 years of experience
